+ jordangadapee.com
|

Finally, i've got a design for the jordangadapee.com folio/freelance site.
Here is your first sneak-peak.
|
|
|
Update
|

The amount of freelance and probono jobs in my life has increased now that I am no longer in school. As a result i'm moving my portfolio and teaching work to jordangadapee.com. 53feet will remain a blog site, though i've not yet decided what i'll do with the folio section. maybe motion... does anyone have any ideas?

teaching 4 classes, like i did last semester, really wipes the hell out of ya. It also causes your brain to shrink. no lie.

DOversight
|

The Design Observer (DO) is a site I visit often to read about Design & Culture. The majority of the articles posted are about design, and as a result the majority of their userbase visit the site in hopes of reading a design article. From time to time, however, the articles are about other topics such as culture and politics.
For some reason the DOs userbase as failed to see the Design & Culture sub-head on their site, and often get upset and irrated that they've wasted time reading about something that their not interested in. This happens because the site offers no clear indication as to the subject matter of a paticular article.
I have no idea how a site that belongs to a group of famous designers, critics, and authors should allow such a major oversight. Perhaps they're too smart for such little problems, so i've solved it for them.
D=Design Content &=Unique/Misc Content C=Culture Content
If an article contains 2 or 3 types of content, then all the boxes would be dark.

53feet is now in color.
|

Finally, you can drag your mouse over the black boxes for color. You can also click the boxes to select that color for use. To reset selected boxes simply click the box again, or refresh the page to reset all of the boxes. Enjoy!
Once again, Hail Noah, King Wizard of the Internet!

+ 10MinNBA
|

I'm back; the crazy busyness of grad school is over. Pardon my absence over the last few of weeks, I needed a little break. To kick things off, I thought I'd attempt to conquer one of my greatest fears, designing a logo for a sports team, and since the NBA playoffs are underway I decided to redo the NBA logo. This is a 10Min design.

+ My show is up.
|

I've been very busy the last few weeks, wrapping up my semester at school, catching up on grading, finishing and defending my thesis, and putting up my show. I've posted a few images from the show, and more will follow soon. Enjoy.

+ 53, Intersecting Pattern
|

Visual explorations of the areas where my typographic comps intersect. Those areas, when changed into patterns, remind me of cell structures. Which leads me to my next question, What might the microscopic structure of letterforms look like? To be continued...

Pattern, don't forget Jordan, you're thinking about pattern. Pattern is an ornament repeated.

+049 Type.
|

Earlier today I came across this site, and I was both amused and intrigued by it. Amused, because the list is portrayed as being somewhat definitive, inspite of the lack of explanation for his selections. Intrigued, by the choices and the authors self motivation to comprise such a list. The composition was created from one of the fonts on the list.

+ 048, Can't we all just get a long... oh wait, we did.
|

Last night, after reading the first 2 chapters of Rick Poynor's No More Rules, I woke up this morning thinking about Modernism and PostModernism. [Side note, i didn't fall asleep from boredom. It's spring break and I'm taking the time to get plenty of rest]. After considering the two movements for a couple of hours, at about 9:07am I suddenly realized why I'm so attracted to Wolfgang Weingart's work.

+ Drawing & Painting, who knew...
|

Often people are surprised when I mention having a minor as a graduate student, and I usually agree with them, in that, it is very odd for a grad-student to have a minor. Mine is in drawing and painting.
Working with type is an evolutionary project for me, these drawings are apart of that evolution. In my conceptual drawing class, I have taken upon myself the task of showing type in its later stages of life. These forms aren't the pristine objects found in my type experiments, but it is those forms colliding with elements of the world.
As I age, I only hope to be as beautiful as worn type on the side of building or rubbed off from the side of a train.

+ From 11:33, unfinished.
|

Typically, i don't show un-finished designs, but today i'm making an exception. Many of you may be looking at the compositions and asking yourself "How is this any more or less finished than some of his other work?"
Well, all of my type & image compositions are completed within a 15 minute time span, and if they are not finished at the end of 15mins, i delete them. This paticular composition was based off of a sketch I scribbled durring class (click the image to see the sketch). While working on the comp this evening, I was interupted by a call to dinner, so the remaining minutes passed while i was eating the most delicious black bean soup i've ever tasted.
If you have any questions about the work or the process, i'd be happy to answer them.

I'm looking forward to the change of season, mostly because I get to wear a scarf.

+ Don't Hurt the Monster
|

I'm enthralled by the combonation of text and image. What specifically attracts me is the way our brains try to make purpose of the mixed images and text. How far can this be pushed, before it seems random and meaningless? Is this random or composed with purpose?

+ A Designer's Art
|

Graphic design which fulfills aesthetic needs, complies with the laws of form and the exigencies of two-dimnsional space; which speaks in semiotics, sans-serifs, and geometrics; which abstracts, transforms, translates, rotates dilates, repeats, mirrors, groups, and regroups is not good design if it is irrelevant. ~Paul Rand
I think there are aspects of Rand's work which one cannot appreciate until having designed for several years.

+ Quick Note

I'd like to just take the time to say, I wish there were more graffiti around iowa city. I love looking at that stuff, especially the typographic forms. I can't say exactly why, I just do.

Welcome to Earth, my home planet. In case you haven't noticed, not that there are many of you out there to notice, I have decided to change the Typographic Experiments category to Type & Image. Semantically the new name more accurately reflects the nature of the newer compositions and to an extent, continues to embody the older compositions as well.
